Music Theory Lessons for Violin Students

Theory is what turns playing the notes into understanding them. These lessons cover notation, rhythm, key signatures, intervals, harmony and aural training — always tied back to the violin repertoire you are actually working on, rather than taught as a separate subject.

For students following the ABRSM or Trinity path, Grade 5 Theory is the gate: ABRSM requires it before you can take a Grade 6, 7 or 8 practical exam. I hold ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory myself and prepare students for it directly.

Theory lessons work well online — the whiteboard is shared, the written work is sent back and forth, and nothing about it needs to happen in the same room.
