Student Progress & Performances

What progress actually looks like: students from their very first lessons through to confident solo performances and competition wins. Every journey is different, but with structured guidance and steady practice this is what becomes possible — whether you learn online or in person.

Violin student of Mahshad Homaei — 1st Place at the 44th National Cultural & Arts Festival

1st Place at the 44th National Cultural & Arts Festival

She achieved 1st Place at the 44th National Cultural & Arts Festival in violin performance.

This achievement did not happen overnight. It was the result of years of consistent violin practice, patience, dedication, and focused guidance. Her journey shows how structured violin lessons, regular practice, and a strong desire to improve can help a student develop both technical skills and confidence as a violinist.

From her early days as a beginner violin student to performing confidently on stage, every step of her progress was built through commitment and continuous improvement.

A Student’s Violin Journey

This student began learning the violin with me completely online in 2023. In the early stages, we focused on building strong foundations in intonation, finger placement, rhythm, tempo, bow control, and sound production.

Through consistent practice, ear training, rhythm exercises, scales, and step-by-step technical work, she has made significant progress in both her violin technique and musical expression.

Today, she is able to perform considerably more challenging repertoire with greater confidence, control, musical phrasing, and stability. We are currently working on Third Position while continuing to refine bow technique, intonation, posture, and consistency.

Her journey is a great example of how structured violin lessons, strong foundations, and consistent practice can help a student develop into a more confident and independent violinist.

From Foundations to Confident Performance

She began learning with me in 2023 after previously studying violin with another teacher. We started by revisiting the fundamentals, focusing on healthy violin posture, violin hold, bow hold, finger placement, and intonation to build a strong technical foundation for her long-term development.

One of her greatest strengths has always been her strong musical ear. Through focused ear training and consistent practice, her intonation has improved significantly. We have also worked systematically on rhythm, timing, and steady tempo, helping her become a more confident and controlled player.

One of the most meaningful changes has been her performance confidence. While she was initially nervous about playing in front of others, she can now perform more advanced pieces confidently for her classmates and is increasingly aware of how to manage performance nerves.

Her bow control and tone production are also developing well. We are now focusing on musical expression, phrasing, dynamics, and Third Position, while incorporating Iranian music and repertoire that genuinely interests her.

This progress reflects my approach to violin teaching: strong foundations, personalized instruction, and steady development of both technique and musical confidence.

From Beginner to Confident Violinist

This student began learning violin with me in 2021 and achieved 1st Place at the 44th National Cultural & Arts Festival in 2026.

Her achievement was built through years of consistent practice, patience, and dedication. Her progress was not always a straight line. We worked through challenges in intonation, rhythm, technique, and musical expression, with particular focus on rhythm reading, metronome practice, and performance confidence.

Her love for both Iranian music and Western classical music has also shaped her learning journey, allowing us to combine her musical interests with structured violin training.

Today, she is developing more advanced skills including shifting, guide finger, silent shifts, vibrato, timing, speed, dynamics, and musical expression.

Her journey shows how consistent violin practice, strong foundations, and personalized guidance can support meaningful long-term progress.

From Doubt About Online Learning to Real Progress

After two years of in-person violin lessons, this student decided to try online violin lessons, although she was initially unsure whether she could make meaningful progress online.

During her first lesson, she was too nervous to play. Instead of putting pressure on her, I asked her to record a piece she already knew and send it to me. This allowed me to understand her starting point and create a step-by-step learning plan.

We focused on the areas that would make the greatest difference, including intonation, rhythm, tone production, bow control, and musical expression. Through targeted exercises, rhythm reading, metronome practice, and consistent feedback, she gradually developed greater control and independence.

After one year, the difference in her playing became clearly noticeable. She was able to maintain rhythm more consistently, play with greater confidence, and better understand how to listen to and correct her own playing.

Her progress is ongoing, but her journey demonstrates how structured online violin lessons, personalized feedback, and consistent practice can help students develop strong technique, musical understanding, and confidence from home.

Two and a Half Years, One Violin

Two and a Half Years, One Violin

May 2024: a 13-second duet from her first violin book, with her eyes fixed on the music stand.

October 2026: more than a minute from memory, with a microphone, in front of her whole school.

What changed
  • Full bow, frog to tip. She used to play short, cautious strokes in the middle of the bow. Now her bow arm opens completely and moves with control from frog to tip.
  • She plays from the upper arm. Her tone now comes from her whole arm rather than a tight forearm, and the sound is fuller and steadier.
  • A straighter bow. Her contact point and bow angle are far more consistent.
  • Real stage confidence. She stands tall, keeps going through every phrase, and owns the moment in front of a full hall.
  • In sync with the accompaniment. She locks in with the backing track, holds a steady tempo, and enters on time with every phrase.
  • She performs, not just reads. She plays from memory, under pressure, and keeps her focus the whole way through.
What’s next
  • Keeping the violin scroll up at shoulder level
  • Lifting her eyes from the fingerboard to the audience
  • Keeping the bow straight at the tip
  • Tone colour, dynamics, and her first steps into vibrato

From Lessons to the Stage

From Lessons to the Stage

On stage: My student performing live with a full ensemble (voice, keyboard and percussion), accompanying a singer in front of an audience.

What’s working

  • Ensemble playing: He accompanies a singer and fits in with keyboard and percussion. That means listening as much as playing.
  • No sheet music: He plays without a music stand, so his attention goes to the music and the band, not the page.
  • Stage stamina and posture: He stands tall and balanced through the whole piece, with no tension creeping into the shoulders.

What’s next

  • Scroll up: Keep the violin a little higher and more level. It frees the left hand and helps the sound project.
  • Eyes up: Look toward the singer and the audience more, not only at the fingerboard.
  • Straight bow at the tip: Keep the bow parallel to the bridge in the upper half for a cleaner, more focused tone.
  • Dynamics and tone colour: Shape phrases with more contrast between soft and loud passages. More musical shaping in every phrase, so the melody tells a story.
